Chesterwood is the country place of Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), sculptor of The Minute Man and the Lincoln for the Lincoln Memorial. He was a leading artist of his era. The site includes his home and studio; museum collections of objects owned and created by him; an archive of historic documents and photographs; outbuildings; and 122 acres of designed and wooded landscapes. The National Trust maintains the historic buildings, collections and landscapes as a museum for the public. The site is open daily, May through October, seven days a week. The six month season mirrors French's annual stay, as well as the local Berkshires tourist season. Docent tours are given a few times daily. Art-making programs are offered for children. Lectures and other special activities are scheduled throughout the season. Additionally, an annual juried sculpture show is presented throughout the grounds for part of the summer season.
