Karen Gardner: Birds and Nature Photography

After a career designing and writing software, I discovered a love of birds and nature photography. Pursuing both, I found that capturing images of the birds that I love, and the natural world in which they reside allowed me to share what I was seeing with others.

Though my eye is always searching out birds to photograph, I also love to photograph landscapes, seascapes, and other critters. Birds, though, are my greatest interest and I try to capture the detail of their intricate patterns, their colors and especially the personality of each bird I’m lucky enough to encounter.

I've travelled to Vietnam a number of times over the years and each time I've been enthralled by its sensual impact - the colors, textures and smells. From the rice terraces in the mountainous north to the street food of Hanoi, from the fishing villages on the coast to the water buffalo markets in the countryside, the journey of the senses can sometimes seem overwhelming. And yet as alluring and intriguing as the sites are, it's the people that have always made it a special experience. I've met many beautiful and friendly people who were graciously willing to be photographed and happy to "chat" with a photographer who doesn't even speak their language.

I hope this exhibit gives the viewer a better insight into the soul of the people and the beauty of their land.
